God's grand plan for the redemption of creation has been in motion since before time began. The book of Ephesians lays out this glorious vision, highlighting the coming of Christ's kingdom on earth - a kingdom that will soon arrive in full. In Alive in Him, Gloria Furman leads us deep into the biblical text, exploring the main themes in Ephesians and showing us how the blessings we have received in Christ empower us to walk in a new way. Designed to be listened to alongside the biblical text, Alive in Him draws us into the plotline of scripture, directing our gaze to the love of Jesus Christ - a love that has the power to transform how we live.

I'm giving this 3 stars for being theologically correct, but I'm up to chapter 5 and really struggling to get through it. The few stories and analogies aren't really capturing me and it feels very repetitive. I'm never exactly sure where the author is going and one paragraph often doesn't seems connected to the next. It's seems like a bunch of theological musings strung together. It feels like picking up a devotional book and reading 15 pages of it. If I wasn't reading for a study, I would not finish.
*edit* I just removed a star. First the Furman describes the Church as "God's cosmic Booyah." Huh? Then says it would be more accurate to say the Church is God giving Satan the middle finger. It made me really appreciate authors like CS Lewis. I agree with her theologically, but I'm struggling with how she expresses concepts.

Phenomenal. A great in depth yet easy to read walk through Ephesians.
Just finished going through this book in a ladies bible study and feel very equipped and challenged by the book of Ephesians! It is a very dense book but highly applicable with truths straight from the text. I am grateful that her writing kept me digging into God's Word!
This was a great choice for our women’s bible study group
The author is a good storyteller. She attempts to intertwine vivid OT passages with NT truths and while I can appreciate her desire to make a lasting picture impression to fix doctrinal truth to memory, one must be sure the picture and the doctrine are interchangeable. I am quite curious that so many reviewers comment on the 'sound doctrine.' It would be helpful for would-be purchasers to understand the 'sound doctrine' is highly subjective. If you believe that Israel is the church, promises to Israel are for the church (literal promises to Israel have been transferred to the church), and that allegorical interpretation is the rule rather than literal interpretation, then you will probably love the book. I would say her desire to impart a love for God's word through Ephesians is a wonderful goal and she does convey her confidence and love for the Word, and her desire to inspire other to love it as well. But it is OFTEN at the expense of clear doctrinal truths which then become a patchwork of dissimilar comparisons. Big on 'warm and fuzzy' rather than doctrinal purity. We don't have liberty to do that no matter how noble our goals. If literal interpretation of God's word is important to you, you will be very distressed while reading this book.
Taking the book of Ephesians in her book, "Alive in Him How Being Embraced by the Love of Christ Changes Everything", Gloria lays the foundation of Christian doctrine (Ephesians 1-3) and continues with right living (Ephesians 4-6).

She quotes, "In light of what we know about God and His plan, walking in this way is fitting worship."

Alive in Him captivated me from the very beginning to the very end. When I came to the last paragraph, I was craving for more. More of God. More of His Word. More growth.

I have read Ephesians various times, sat through an excellent module in Bible school, and read through John Phillips commentary, yet Gloria brought to my attention how being embraced by the love of Christ changes everything. She says, "Love compels us to study the Word of God deeply and handle it rightly so we don't sacrifice its true meaning on the altar of our culture or personal preferences."

While reading Alive in Him, I have grown deeper in my knowledge and understanding of Who God is, what unity truly means as a body of believers, and how "spirit-filled living and wise walking" "bring Him maximum glory".

Gloria has an amazing way of writing that encouraged me to grow and dig deeper into God's Word. I have 6 full pages of notes and quotes from Alive in Him, and even though I rarely read a book twice, this is one book that I already cannot wait to read again as I once again study out one of my favorite books of the Bible, Ephesians.

I received a complimentary review copy by the publisher, and I was not required to do a review on the book, Alive in Him. This review is my honest opinion.
My group of Ladies really likes this book. We just started Chapter 9. Gloria Furman has a way with words and offers new ways of thinking about a whole host of things. Love this book.
How Jesus changes everything - from our souls, our beliefs, our doctrine, our behavior, our lives. These insights on Ephesians from Gloria Furman have definitely been refreshing to read – at times very convicting. She takes readers on a journey through all the chapters of Ephesians beginning where Paul begins – with doctrine and theology. The sound doctrine and pure truth of Christianity – that the salvation of our souls and the forgiveness of our sin is found only in Jesus Christ, the Son of God. While all of her book is so good and she covers a ton of content, my favorite part was her admonition and discussion of Christian unity. That the mystery that Paul explains is what God has revealed to us – that very different and even opposing people groups (like the Jews and the Gentiles) can be brought together as one through the sacrifice and life of One for the purpose of building God’s church on earth. While fellowship with the body of Christ is challenging and never easy, Jesus gives us all we need to first submit to Him and to submit to others in love as we walk worthy of the gospel. Because the gospel is here to change us, to tear down wrong beliefs and walls that prevent love from blossoming. Even our gifts from God are to share with the body, to use to build up and edify believers. The love of Christ compels us to love others, to study His word, to speak the truth in love, to fight against false doctrine and to pray for the good of our brothers and sisters. To worship Him because “we will become what we worship.” And it’s all for the purpose of bringing everything and everyone under the rule and reign of Jesus Christ. As we live for Him and wait for Him, we serve with our fellow believers covered with the armor of God to fight against Satan’s schemes and show others with our word and deeds the beauty of God’s kingdom.
